“She’s secret and shy, but she’s very charismatic. So it’s hard to see that hidden part of her, so blinding is her charisma.”

Kipner & Shaddick wrote “Physical” with a male vocalist in mind, originally envisioning someone like Rod Stewart because, ya know “Do You Think I’m Sexy?” (rhetorical).
But they first offered the song to Tina Turner, who wouldn’t have a hit with “What’s Love Got To Do With It” until three years later. She turned it down and recommended Olivia Newton-John who accepted the offer, later explaining to People Magazine, “I just wasn’t in the mood for tender ballads. I wanted peppy stuff because that’s how I’m feeling”.
To mask the sexual nature of the lyrics, it was associated with the early ‘80s fitness craze happening at the time. A Dark Period in our history. But many DJs still considered it controversial due to its overtly suggestive lyrics. It was banned in places like Utah (not shocking considering their feelings towards caffeine) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation refused to air the song until the line “There’s nothing left to talk about unless it’s horizontally” was taken out. I mean, what did they have against taking naps?

Too much domestication is like forbidding the vital essence to dance. In its proper and healthy state, the wild self is not docile nor vacuous. It is alert and responsive to any given movement or moment, It is not locked into an absolute and repetitive pattern for any and all circumstances. It has creative choice.

Remembering Nico who tragically passed away 35 years ago today. 🖤
“I saw that the impression the rock press made on the public was dishonest. It seemed that an attempt had been made to erase her from history. She was a female composer who didn’t fit the general categories of rock or folk; she sang her own creations not with feigned passion, but with clarity and eloquence. They only wrote about a drug addict who once fucked a bunch of stars. I’ve been a witness to abhorrent misogyny in the music business, classical, pop, jazz and experimental scenes for a long time, and I thought it would be useful to study her career in those terms.”

Love every leaf… Love the animals, love the plants, love everything. If you love everything, you will perceive the divine mystery in things. Once you have perceived it, you will begin to comprehend it better every day, and you will come at last to love the world with an all-embracing love.
